about

Pérfida Iguana is a space of creation and research in dance (São Paulo, Brazil) created and managed by dancer and choreographer Carolina Callegaro, visual artist and performer Renan Marcondes and actress and producer Tetembua Dandara. Its main objective is to research intersections between contemporary dance and visual arts, which could also be defined as the many imaginable and tense relations between body and image from the intersection between dance - technical and compositional tools of improvisation and choreography -, the performative procedures and the expositive structures and autonomous installations.

Since we started the work in 2014, we have chosen to name Pérfida Iguana not as a group or a company, but as a space of creation and production in contemporary dance. This is due to the interest in a way of creation and production that remains horizontal in all its stages, an interest that led us to choose to work without a central figure of direction and, consequently, to share the joint routing of the directions of each work with the production and collaborating artists - always invited to add their eyes to each creative process. Thus, we have established solid and constant ties with several artists whose personal research is increasingly merging with our research interests. Likewise, our research also seems to affect them, since Pérfida Iguana has also started to collaborate in the personal projects of these artists in recent years.

Currently, we are engaged in the research entitled Reconhecer e Perseguir funded by ProAc – Programa de Ação Cultural do Governo do Estado de São Paulo – produção e temporada de espetáculos inéditos de dança (2019). The results are released on this website.

history

The first rehearsals, at the beginning of 2014, were focused on research on the possibilities of technical procedures from Contact Improvisation to be applied to installation structures. This year, with the support of ProAc Programa de Ação Cultural do Governo do Estado de São Paulo - primeiras obras em dança, we debuted two works, directly influenced by the research in progress: a solo by Renan Marcondes with collaboration by Carolina Callegaro Como um jabuti matou uma onça e fez uma gaita de um de seus ossos and a duet by the artists Um instante anterior à extrema violência, both works marked by the transit of languages, occupying a hybrid place between a permanent exhibition and a dance piece.

In 2016, in addition to continuing the research in the rehearsal room, the collective published Assédio, signed by Renan Marcondes, in partnership with the publisher Lamparina Luminosa, which condenses notes and process records of the first two pieces. At the end of that year, without any financial support, they released the play materiaIVONE, a choreographed reading of letters.

During 2017, Pérfida Iguana worked in partnership with the artist Clarissa Sacchelli to create the performance Boas Garotas, performed with the support of  videobrasil in the first edition of its Videobrasil Dance Season.

In 2018, Pérfida Iguana worked in the direction of the play Sem Luz, by invitation of the actor Artur Kon; collaborated in the creation of O peixe, by Érica Tessarolo; and premiered Zulmira Elizabeth, a work directed by Renan Marcondes, funded by Dança no MIS: Prêmio de Criação em Residência at MIS – Museu da Imagem e do Som.

In 2019, the project Reconhecer e perseguir was funded by ProAc Programa de Ação Cultural do Governo do Estado de São Paulo - produção e temporada de espetáculos inéditos de dança  - which is in progress. In the same year, Renan Marcondes began to produce within Pérfida Iguana Azul - Jardim, a spectacle awarded by the Cultura Inglesa Festival, scheduled to premiere in 2021.
